5 Things You Don’t Want To Miss On Your Lisbon Tour

The coastal capital, Lisbon is the most visited city in Portugal. Known for its incredible nightlife, impressive buildings and palatable food and wine, Lisbon is ideal for a short getaway in Europe. Some of the best Lisbon tours take you through the spectacular cliff-top district of Alfama, hilltop castles and mesmerising Fado performances. A 3-day trip to Lisbon would give you ample opportunity to explore and blend into the Portuguese culture. Here are the 5 absolute must-do things when in Lisbon.

  1. Alfama District

The most recommended activity in Lisbon is to take a walk up the hill to explore the 18th-century neighbourhood of Alfama. You might not want to miss the colourful alleys amongst the Baroque buildings. The locals are very accommodative here and one should take advantage of this to learn about their culture and heritage. There are numerous cafes and boutiques around the district where you can try the famous pastel de nata and enjoy an evening of Fado music. The area also hosts a few museums and churches that are worth visiting.

  1. Baixa

The most modern and sophisticated part of the city is the Baixa District. It has a certain artistic flair to it with colourful murals and decorative fountains adorning the central plaza. Many sophisticated and chic restaurants can be found in the vicinity along with luxury brand boutiques and stores.

  1. Sao Jorge Castle

Located atop one of the seven hills in Lisbon is the most gorgeous castle in the area that gives a peek into the history of the Portuguese Empire. The castle offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the nearest surroundings. An archeological museum is open for tourists in the premises of the castle that showcases the history of Portugal and displays the items excavated and belonging to periods dating back to medieval and iron age.

  1. Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower

Adorned with the UNESCO World Heritage Site titles, both Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower are frequently visited by tourists and locals alike. The monastery houses the tomb of Vasco da Gama – the greatest explorer of all times. Belem Tower is renowned for its Gothic architecture and presence in the ancient history of Portugal. It holds a great significance in the Portuguese maritime discoveries.

  1. The Monument of Discoveries

Carved out of a giant monolithic stone is the fascinating Monument of Discoveries dedicated to the Portuguese navigators. Built at a height of 50 metres, tourists are allowed to climb the six floors of the monument to soak in the mesmerising views of the surroundings. Sitting on the bank of River Tagus, each side of the monument has 33 navigators and explorers etched on it. By the monument, a huge compass covers the floor representing the routes of discoveries.

Lisbon is a contemporary town thriving alongside the nation’s history and modern culture. Try their world-famous port wine and custard tarts when in Lisbon. So, plan your ultimate Lisbon trip this season for an amazing time with history.
