Top Ten Road-Trip Songs

Okay, so lists like these are subjective, I’ll concede to that, but I’m sure if we have even the slightest similarities in our tastes in music, you’ll agree with me on quite a few of these tracks being great songs for a road-trip.

Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

Yes, that episode of the hit American sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” comes to mind with this one, when Ted and Marshall played the song over and over again as it was stuck in the car’s tape deck while on somewhat of a road-trip.

Kool & The Gang – God’s Country

The words say it all with this one — “Travelling, oooh travelling, over God’s country…” so I perhaps needn’t say more. This tune will get you through the longest drive without feeling a single inch of the road I tell you.

Celine Dion – I Drove All Night

Yep, “I drove all night, to make love to you” — for the starry eyed love struck travellers out there who literally can’t bear another moment away from their love interest, so much so that they’re willing to drive all night to cure their love sickness.

KT Tunstall – Other Side of the World

Again, the title says it all here. “You’re on the other side of the world,” words which leave a lot open for the eager traveller to fill in the blanks and just make a plan to get to the other side of the world.

5th Dimension – Up, Up and Away

I’m particularly fond of this song by the 5th Dimension because it sort of reminds me of all the adventures one has when on a road-trip, when you stop along the way to discover some fun which only awaits the inquisitive road-tripper.

Barenaked Ladies – If I Had $1,000,000

This one only makes the list because it embodies what every traveller wishes they had, which is a million dollars (maybe more) to fund their travels with.

Smokey Robinson – Cruisin’

“I love it when we’re cruisin’ together…” the words say it all again with this one. There’s nothing like the self with another self you’re truly fond of, which in my case is my bosom buddy Santi and/or my younger brother Rory (the girlfriend goes without saying…boss lady), the open road and a full tank of petrol to eat up the miles with.

Stacie Orrico – More to Life

This song will make you want to just jump into your car and drive, perhaps to the airport if you can afford a plane ticket just like that, but it speaks to the inner-traveller in anyone who truly wants to see more of the world beyond their own immediate surroundings.

Christopher Cross – Sailing

Okay, this one perhaps takes things beyond the road itself, but it’s a very fitting tune for the road nevertheless.

Chris Isaak – Nothing’s Changed

I particularly love this tune when rolling into quaint, old towns and when I visit some of those places which induce a bit of nostalgia in me, most of which I would have naturally visited some time ago as a kid or just earlier in my life.
